Possible research areas in computer engineering are simply too numerous to mention here. However , taking into consideration the current interests of the faculty of Computer Engineering Department and the national needs in Saudi Arabia , we list the following areas :
- Design and implementation of special purpose computers and microprocessors for use at KFUPM or by other institutions in the Kingdom.
- Various techniques for automation the design of VLSI systems (Design Automation Lab.)
- Various applications of microcomputers such as in control , communication and speech.
- Basic research in multi-microprocessor architectures and their functional capabilities.
- Various applications of computer-generated voice (e.g. for limited English to Arabic translation ) and computer-generated graph (e.g. for architectural design).
- Basic research in various aspects of computer based systems such as use of robots (Robotics Lab.)
- Development and use of Arabic-based computer systems.
- Design , implementation and testing of digital systems ( Design Automation Lab.)
Computer Engineering Research projects completed or currently in progress or under consideration by KACST or KFUPM Research Committee include :
- Development of multi-processing systems for robot control.
- Printed Circuit Boards Layout from RTL Specification (M.S. Thesis).
- Development of Software Systems for VLSI System design.
- Implementation of hardware design languages.
- Implementation of distributed computing system for real time environment.
