Possible research areas in computer engineering are simply too numerous to mention here. However , taking into consideration the current interests of the faculty of Computer Engineering Department and the national needs in Saudi Arabia , we list the following areas :

  • Design and implementation of special purpose computers and microprocessors for use at KFUPM or by other institutions in the Kingdom.
  • Various techniques for automation the design of VLSI systems (Design Automation Lab.)
  • Various applications of  microcomputers such as in control , communication and speech.
  • Basic research in multi-microprocessor architectures and their functional capabilities.
  • Various applications of computer-generated voice (e.g. for limited English to Arabic translation ) and computer-generated graph (e.g. for architectural design).
  • Basic research in various aspects of computer based systems such as use of robots (Robotics Lab.)
  • Development and use of Arabic-based computer systems.
  • Design , implementation and testing of digital systems ( Design Automation Lab.)

Computer Engineering Research projects completed or currently in progress or under consideration by KACST or KFUPM Research Committee include :

  • Development of multi-processing systems for robot control.
  • Printed Circuit Boards Layout from RTL Specification (M.S. Thesis).
  • Development of Software Systems for VLSI System design.
  • Implementation of hardware design languages.
  • Implementation of distributed computing system for real time environment.
  • Special purpose computer for Arabic test processing.
  • VLSI design data base (M.S. Thesis).
  • VLSI mask generation from RTL specifications (Ph.D. Thesis).
  • An integrated system for VLSI design and manufacturing.
  • UPM-Project ROBOT/98/ entitled "On the Design of a robot welder".
  • R.I. supported project entitled, " Design of a sensor for the detection of internal cracks in metallic bodies ".
  • Design and implementation of an integrated design environment for high-level silicon compilation (University).
  • An integrated Design Automation System for generating VLSI layouts (KACST).
