On May 19, 1997 the IBM Corporation and CSI announced a joint marketing agreement. The agreement gives IBM the rights to sell and distribute CardBASE2000®, developed by CSI, on a world-wide basis. "Our newly-developed partnership with CSI recognises not only the need for superior smart card products but the increasingly important customer demand for solution-orientated companies to deliver software tools that can be used in conjunction with their existing systems," said Peter Sany, the General Manager for IBM Smart Card Solutions. The agreement means IBM can now build the flexibility, security and superior functionality contained within CardBASE2000® into its smart card solutions and IBM have said that they want to see their partnership with CSI flourish and grow in line with world-wide demands for electronic payment solutions. The agreement strengthens IBM’s Smart Card Solutions Portfolio, especially in the area of the implementing multiple proprietary-based electronic purse schemes such as Proton, VISA-Cash, Mondex, and CLIP. Commenting on behalf of Card Services International Limited, Aonghus Geraghty, Managing Director, said "This alliance with IBM is a major endorsement of our decision to invest heavily in the development of an EMV-compliant, multifunction, chip card management system. As banks world-wide begin to migrate from magnetic stripe to chip cards, a CardBASE2000® solution implemented by IBM, will provide card issuers and acquirers with the security and flexibility demanded by this dynamic market." IBM, will provide card issuers and acquirers with the security and flexibility demanded by such a dynamic market.
