Sarah Flynn, Editor Jupiter Communications: Jupiter's Internet payment report found that smart cards, e-cash and e-checks are expected to pay for "almost half of the $7.3bn in online commerce" expected to be spent online by the year 2000. Credit cards are expected to remain the dominant payment method for transactions over $10, but smart card and e-money technologies are expected to gain a significant share of this growing market for goods bought below $10. International Data Corporation: July: Web commerce is set to grow from $2.6 Billion in 1996 to over $220 Billion in 2001, according to new research by International Data Corporation. News.com: July 22: Sun Microsystems has licensed Java technology to Siemens AG for use in its chips integrated into smart cards. Siemens will use the technology to produce a new line of smart card chips. Forrester Research: July: According to Forrester Research, the total value of web commerce between companies over the Internet will reach $8 Billion in 1997 and £327 Billion by the year 2002. IBM: July 17: IBM and Gemplus have announced their intentions to co-operate in the provision of global smart card solutions.
