ISSUE 2 - JUNE 1997 Welcome to the June edition of CSI-Digest. The primary objective of this FREE newsletter is to keep you informed of major global smart card industry developments on a monthly basis. Sarah Flynn, Editor Europay: May 1997: Three leading Czech banks have launched the Czech Republic's first national, domestic electronic purse pilot using EMV standards, and Europay specifications and architecture. Ernst & Young: June 1997: A study by Ernst & Young LLP, the firm's sixth annual report on technology in banking and financial services, 87 percent of US firms said they expect to have Internet transactions by 1999. All Canadian and Australian firms plan to have Internet transaction capabilities by 1999. Among the bigger banks, there are plans to quadruple spending on corporate Internet projects from the current level over the next three years. Netscapeworld: Smart cards have been used for years as stored value cards in Europe, but are now being introduced by Netscape and Microsoft for the purpose of security on the Internet. Netscapeworld discusses the impact smart cards will have on the Internet - Smart Cards are expected to "jump-start electronic commerce on the Web". Hewlett Packard: June 16: HP is scheduled to begin shipping business PCs by October which
will include smart card keyboards. These new smart card keyboards are
expected to boost the use of smart cards among US corporations as they
have been designed to facilitate secure electronic commerce in a business
environment. Hilton Hotels: May 28: Hilton Hotels, along with American Express and IBM have implemented a hotel industry test of smart cards to enhance the check-in/check-out process for travelers. The pilot represents the first public implementation in the United States of separate applications performed by the same chip. "With its dynamic chip functionality, the smart card enables us to provide an unprecedented level of service to our loyal guests," said Robert E. Dirks, senior vice president - marketing, Hilton Hotels Corporation. Visa June 20: Visa has announced the completion of the "Chip Electronic Commerce Standard", and has made its standards documentation available to the EMV standards working group, vendors, financial institutions and others within the payment card industry. June 26: Verifone have predicted that the combined force of Internet commerce and smart cards will dramatically alter the manner in which consumers spend their money, and that electronic purse products and loyalty programs will be key drivers of US consumer acceptance of smart cards. June 25: Hewlett Packard has completed its $1.29 billion merger transaction to acquire VeriFone Inc.. This merger is likely to accelerate the global delivery of a wide range of electronic-commerce solutions for customers, businesses and financial institutions world-wide.
