CardBASE2000^® is a unique technology framework, which can adapt and expand to the specific needs of each card issuer. It supports all international standards, and can integrate with existing IT systems.

This is a walkthrough of some of the key management functions that are at the core of the CardBASE2000^® framework:

A Functional Framework

CardBASE2000^® allows issuers to populate and set-up new smart card product databases using information stored on existing issuer databases, or by manually entering the cardholder details into the system. Once the cardholder details have been stored in CardBASE2000^®, the cards can be automatically primed with product information, the issuer’s secret keys, and then issued to the cardholders, in individual or selected batches. Card Management options provide the facilities to manage the entire life cycle of the card from issue, through use or misuse, to expiry and reissue. CardBASE2000^® enables issuers provide a comprehensive range of reloadable & disposable products and services to their customers.

One of the unique facilities provided by CardBASE2000^® is the support of multiple private label and International brand products on a single card. All products on the card are kept totally separate by secure ‘firewalls’, guaranteeing the security and integrity of each product application.

Each product managed by CardBASE2000^® may have its own effective dates, expiry dates, limits, operational and management parameters, which can be customised to suit each issuer’s particular requirements.

Additionally, CardBASE2000^® provides the facility to separate product ownership, (i.e. payment responsibility for a product on a card) from card ownership, and this product owner may be different from the cardholder. This innovative design provides greater flexibility to issuers, in how cards and products can be promoted.

CardBASE2000^® provides secure yet simple methods for value loading smart cards.

Once a card has been issued by the CardBASE2000^® system it can be immediately loaded with value from a wide variety of devices and locations. Value can be loaded on to the card using cash at vending style machines or by using traditional banking terminals to access a cardholders bank or credit card account.

CardBASE2000^® performs value-loading authorisation by storing the issuer unique ‘Credit Keys’ on the CardBASE2000^® Authorisation server to accept or reject load requests from remote terminals.

When accepted, the cardholder is able to transfer a monetary value to the card using the funds download facility. The cardholder is requested to enter an amount and providing that this amount does not exceed the available funds balance and the daily funds download limit, the value will be transferred to the card.

Non CardBASE2000^® transactions and requests are routed to the appropriate institutions using the CardBASE2000^® interchange facility. Value Load & Authorisation Schematic

CardBASE2000^® provides a full range of facilities for managing merchants. Issuer can easily set-up new merchants or import existing information into the merchant database. CardBASE2000^® records the settlement instructions and provides details of the charges and commissions, accounts and currencies for each merchant. Transactions may also be settled in multiple currencies.

CardBASE2000^® allows full control over the existence, status, location and history of devices within the system. It provides flexible device management and tracks each change in a device’s status as it is installed, commissioned, used and deactivated.

In addition, a complete set of communication details may be stored for each device. These communication parameters can be used in conjunction with transaction acquiring systems to control communications and the collection of transactions from devices.

CardBASE2000^® is a highly secure card management system and can use hardware or software to generate the unique security keys required, maintaining the integrity of the system.

Every aspect of CardBASE2000^® is secure; the card, the associated devices and all transactions and file movements, internal or external, to the system. The system can use its own security modules to generate keys or alternatively, it can support keys generated from existing systems. Security & Key Management Schematic

CardBASE2000^® supports all the necessary transaction processing functions required for reloadable and disposable card products issued by the system. CardBASE2000^® transactions are collected from terminals using standard PSTN lines or by providing an interface to existing acquiring systems.

When used for Electronic Purse, each transaction that modifies the balance of a purse contains two certificates, a command certificate and a transaction certificate. The command certificate verifies that the card executed the command, and the transaction certificate verifies the amount and the purse balance. Should either of the certificates fail validation, the transaction is invalidated and placed into an exception table where it can be later analysed.

All transaction data is protected by a Message Authentication Certificate, (MAC), which guarantees integrity in transmission from the terminal to CardBASE2000^®.
