Here is an example of some of the products that may reside simultaneously on a Smart card. These management solutions are all product independent and are designed to support a full range of both private and international payment brands.
Cash payments account for almost eighty percent of the world’s commercial transactions. By eliminating the need to carry small change, electronic purses reduce cash handling costs and help streamline payments worldwide. Typically, an electronic purse facility is used for conducting lower value transactions, less than $10. A customer may choose to load value into the Purse either by cash load or transfer of value from the bank account. This loading of value requires an online procedure for security reasons, and the use of a PIN number is optional. Purchases made using the Electronic Purse are performed off-line reducing processing costs. The transactions are recorded in the merchant terminal and uploaded at the end of each working day to CardBASE2000®. The Electronic Purse is not linked to an individual bank account, but to a float account that is held by the Bank system. By eliminating the need to carry small change, electronic purses reduce cash handling costs.
Combining the recordkeeping function of a traditional bank book with the benefit of an electronic purse, the electronic passbook with built-in PIN based validation is the ideal solution for secure higher value transactions, typically greater than $10, at retail outlets. All passbook debit transactions are PIN protected. The card records the last 30 transactions on a rolling basis within its transaction history file, and the customer will be provided with a statement after every 30 transactions. The customer can also view this history at selected terminals. Loading of value into the Passbook is performed on a terminal connected online to CardBASE2000®. Value may be added as a cash load or transfer of value from a bank source. The transactions are recorded in the merchant terminal and uploaded at the end of each working day to CardBASE2000®.
Loyalty schemes provide a mechanism for retailers, banks and utility companies to improve customer loyalty through rewarding customers for their custom. Points are awarded when purchasing goods and services and making bill payments. Loyalty points can be recorded on the card relating to the value of the purchase at selected retailers, and retailers’ terminals will have to facility to specify whether they give points or not, as well as the points per value. Loyalty points can be automatically incremented on a card when any online connection is made to CardBASE2000®. Award and redemption transactions are stored in the terminal and uploaded periodically. The retailer is billed for the number of points awarded by the Card Issuer, and the loyalty purse is fully audited.
By integrating with existing funds transfer systems, smart cards can be used to deliver a range of convenient payment services such as bill payment. It allows a cardholder to pay for utilities such as electricity, gas and water with their purse. Selected merchant terminals support the bill payment service. The customer selects the service to pay and enters the amount, which is debited from their purse. The customer may select up to 25 suppliers from a list of companies who have agreed to participate. This may also be linked to the loyalty scheme. Bill Payments are uploaded from terminals as part of the normal transaction upload procedure.
ChipFUEL was specifically designed to meet the growing needs of the Oil Industry. The system allows Oil companies sell value-added services to its corporate customers by providing a Fleet Management system using the latest Smart card technology. In addition to the Fleet Management function, the card can be used to support Loyalty schemes and Electronic Purse functions. By using a smart card, a purchase can be made completely off-line reducing processing costs. ChipFUEL can be integrated to the Oil Companies Petrol Management System to link the forecourt pumps and PoS terminals to the smart card reader. This level of automation is convenient for the cardholder, yet provides all the necessary security and control for the Corporate customer.
ChipCREW is a specific chip card product implemented within CardBASE2000®™, for the management of airline crew allowances. ChipCREW is a multi-currency product, and enables airlines pay travel/overseas allowances to their staff, via the hotel of destination. All allowances are managed in the local currency of destination and residual balances applied to payroll in local currency. A smart card is issued to each staff member who is entitled to receive travel/overseas allowances. On issue, the card has a zero balance. Prior to departure the staff member uses a self-service ViewStation to ‘load’ their card with the relevant allowance for their trip. The allowance is loaded in the currency of destination. On arrival at their hotel a staff member may convert part/all of their allowance into cash. The relevant amount is debited from the card. On return to their home base a staff member may ‘off load’ any unused allowance via the ViewStation. These unused allowances will be paid via the month-end payroll. The ViewStation has an on-line connection to the airline mainframe. Via this connection the ViewStation will receive the crew allowance data and pass back to the mainframe data relating to unused allowances.
